  • About me | Tomas Bases

Wuppertal, Germani (1968) Tomàs Bases is an illustrator and animation filmmaker with an extensive professional background. He studied Artistic Illustration at the Llotja de Barcelona, where he worked from 1993, undertaking various projects in multimedia, video games, museums, editorial, and audiovisual fields, with notable works like Nostranau, Pinzellades d’art, or the animated film "Wasahali". With the creation of his short films Abriendo Puertas and Princesa China, he received numerous awards at national and international festivals. Now based in Seville, he dedicates himself to artistic projects that unleash his creativity, always experimenting with new artistic proposals like his recent three-dimensional wood illustrations, the medieval-themed prints from the "Soy pez soy pájaro soy lombriz" project, or the narrative experiment "Loreta y el espejo". Among his recent projects, there is a growing interest in the use of generative artificial intelligence alongside artisan elements, viewing his creative work as a simple game to enjoy, without greater pretension or interest. It is in this intimate game, increasingly removed from the market and audience's gaze, where he manages to find some meaning in the absurdity that artistic work is, for him. Opening doors Year: 2014. Format: Video HD. Direction and production: Tomàs Bases. 15 minute short film about the experiences of a person with mental illness. Abriendo Puertas was born with the pedagogical desire to show the many difficulties that accompany a mental illness such as schizophrenia. Making use of a sense of humor and without ignoring the immense existing drama, the short film makes use of an aesthetic proposal full of animations, seeking to bring the viewer the experience of dissociation between oneself and the perceived reality. • Wood Art 2022 | Tomas Bases | laser-cut

Wood Art A unique collection of illustrations on wood. Exploring the Magic of Volumetric Illustrations with Tomàs Bases: Mastery in Laser Cut, Illustration, and Limitless Craftsmanship. Solid woods sanded and polished with natural wax, without dyes or varnishes, specifically selected for each piece, cut with laser light, and assembled with utmost care. With this collection, Bases explores a passion for noble woods, living material crafted with the warmth of hands, the precision of laser, and the aroma of natural wax. He does so by playing with the language of comics and the fantasy that, even as a child, he forged—why not say it?—reading Cavall Fort. The crowning touch of this proposal is, of course, the three-dimensional interpretation of his illustrations, a result of his career as a 3D illustrator. A simple, honest, and surprisingly complex and delicate form of popular art. A year of research and development culminates in the Comic-wood collection of ten pieces. -Underwater- -The Octopus- -The Toast- -Family Matters- - Cosmic Games - -Da Vinci- -The Balloon Trip- -Afro Mask- -On Monday- - Caged Bird - The Art of Volumetric Illustration: Laser Cut as a Starting Point Tomàs Bases has perfected volumetric illustration by employing the laser cut technique as his primary creative tool. This technique allows for precision cutting of Bases' intricate illustrations on small, solid wood pieces with thicknesses not exceeding two millimeters. The result is a unique fusion of shapes, shadows, and textures that come to life in each artwork. Mastery in Details: Solid Woods and Dye-Free Waxing What further distinguishes Tomàs Bases' work is his commitment to the authenticity and naturalness of wood. Before the cutting process, each wood undergoes a meticulous ritual of sanding, polishing, and waxing, avoiding the use of artificial dyes. This artisanal approach highlights the natural beauty of the wood, creating a striking contrast between the modern technique of laser cut and the organic essence of the material. Assembly and Finish es: The Complete Transformation Bases mastery extends beyond volumetric design and material attention; it is also reflected in the skill to assemble the resulting pieces, creating harmonious and intricate compositions. Final touches, such as applying chalk paint on the sides or gold leaf, add layers of depth and personality to each artwork, turning it into a complete visual experience. Ex ploring Sensations: Materials and Sizes Tomàs creative challenge extends to reproducing each of his designs using different materials and sizes than the original, always with a limit of ten reproductions per design . Transparent or opaque acrylics, cardboard painted with acrylics in large formats, high-quality papers for even smaller formats than the original, or plywood covered with gold leaf: the excitement of a different and surprising result open to customer participation. If you wish to acquire a reproduction of one of these designs, please contact t he author. Each piece is crafted only on demand, using artisanal methods and materials specifically chosen for each design and client. Sizes also vary depending on the materials used. Unique and delicate works that mix art and crafts, fantasy and tradition.

The animation The full animated version of "I am a fish, I am a bird, I am a worm" seeks the poetic part of the project. The visual power of the medieval imaginary colludes with the force of music to dream a picture that is freed from the script of the story and thus fly through the visual fantasy of the project. To achieve this, I was lucky enough to have the musical rights to several pieces by the great Japanese composer and musician Shoji Yamashiro, author of the soundtrack for AKIRA (Katsuhiro Otomo). Medieval Fantasy In 2023 I was fortunate to have the extraordinary composer Raphael Wildemann to put on B.S.O. to four looped fragments taken from this work. The result, with the permission of the great Shoji Yamashiro, was unsurpassable. Four exquisite compositions, full of nuances and aromas that evoke much more than imagined in my animations. Pure goldsmithing and exceptional luxury in these times. We call them Medieval Fantasy. Listen to it with headphones. The book I am fish I am bird I am worm illustrated tale I am a fish, I am a bird, I am a worm is an illustrated tale that narrates the fantastic adventures of the young and ambitious King Leopold, who will renounce Yes  same in order to obtain power. In the end, his ambition will be rewarded, though not for long and at a heavy price. Inspired by the story of Alexander the Great, the tale emphasizes the value of courage and perseverance even in the most adverse situations. This book has an edition of 1000 copies sold by Diábolo Ediciones. Language: Spanish TO BUY

Behind The house of the Xuclis Year: 2012. Client: Western Productions, La Casa Dels Xuclis Foundation, Potato. Animation and 3D Composition: Tomás Bases. Character design: Roser Capdevila. The day my friend Xavi Morón called me to participate in this project, I had no idea what "La casa dels Xuclis" was. After learning about the facilities and the work of this foundation dedicated to supporting children with cancer treatments, I couldn't help but jump for joy, very excited and grateful to be able to contribute a grain of sand. The work consisted of using the fun designs of the illustrator Roser Capdevila and bringing them to life within the video, integrating them into the scenes.

This is the second piece made in 2021 with this design. This design is always built with different woods, being sold as a unique piece identifiable through its veins, recognizable in the archival photographic references that the author makes of each piece and shows on this website. An unequivocal form of identification. The author only undertakes the realization of a new piece after the sale of the latest version of each design or on demand. Given the complexity of its realization, it can take between two and four weeks to finish and deliver a design. For any questions or concerns, please contact the author. This piece is shipped in a cardboard box, protected inside with extra-firm foam (density 40 kg per cubic meter) and outside with plastic protection. I recommend not exposing this piece to direct sunlight, or high temperatures or places with high humidity: solid wood is a living and delicate material that must be protected. If necessary, any dust that may accumulate can be removed with a soft brush. The piece was only polished with natural wax: it does not contain varnishes or dyes. The piece has a built-in hanger on the back (it does not appear in the photograph), in case you want to hang it on a wall.
