Wood Art
A unique collection of illustrations on wood.
Exploring the Magic of Volumetric Illustrations with Tomàs Bases: Mastery in Laser Cut, Illustration, and Limitless Craftsmanship.
Solid woods sanded and polished with natural wax, without dyes or varnishes, specifically selected for each piece, cut with laser light, and assembled with utmost care.
With this collection, Bases explores a passion for noble woods, living material crafted with the warmth of hands, the precision of laser, and the aroma of natural wax. He does so by playing with the language of comics and the fantasy that, even as a child, he forged—why not say it?—reading Cavall Fort. The crowning touch of this proposal is, of course, the three-dimensional interpretation of his illustrations, a result of his career as a 3D illustrator. A simple, honest, and surprisingly complex and delicate form of popular art. A year of research and development culminates in the Comic-wood collection of ten pieces.
The Art of Volumetric Illustration: Laser Cut as a Starting Point
Tomàs Bases has perfected volumetric illustration by employing the laser cut technique as his primary creative tool. This technique allows for precision cutting of Bases' intricate illustrations on small, solid wood pieces with thicknesses not exceeding two millimeters. The result is a unique fusion of shapes, shadows, and textures that come to life in each artwork.
Mastery in Details: Solid Woods and Dye-Free Waxing
What further distinguishes Tomàs Bases' work is his commitment to the authenticity and naturalness of wood. Before the cutting process, each wood undergoes a meticulous ritual of sanding, polishing, and waxing, avoiding the use of artificial dyes. This artisanal approach highlights the natural beauty of the wood, creating a striking contrast between the modern technique of laser cut and the organic essence of the material.
Assembly and Finishes: The Complete Transformation
Bases mastery extends beyond volumetric design and material attention; it is also reflected in the skill to assemble the resulting pieces, creating harmonious and intricate compositions. Final touches, such as applying chalk paint on the sides or gold leaf, add layers of depth and personality to each artwork, turning it into a complete visual experience.
Exploring Sensations: Materials and Sizes
Tomàs creative challenge extends to reproducing each of his designs using different materials and sizes than the original, always with a limit of ten reproductions per design. Transparent or opaque acrylics, cardboard painted with acrylics in large formats, high-quality papers for even smaller formats than the original, or plywood covered with gold leaf: the excitement of a different and surprising result open to customer participation.
If you wish to acquire a reproduction of one of these designs, please contact the author. Each piece is crafted only on demand, using artisanal methods and materials specifically chosen for each design and client. Sizes also vary depending on the materials used.
Unique and delicate works that mix art and crafts, fantasy and tradition.
